With still no word from Freya ten minutes later, my irritation at her being irresponsible and not getting in touch was beginning to sway into low-level anxiety. Where the hell was she and why hadn’t she returned any of my messages or calls? She knew better than to not contact me.

I didn’t want to alarm anyone yet, but I was clock-watching and checking my phone for messages or a missed call every few minutes.

An hour later and I was grabbing my jacket to go out and look for her myself when the front door opened and in came Freya with Kian.

‘Where the hell have you been?’ I demanded. ‘I’ve been trying to get hold of you all afternoon. I was about to go and look for you.’

I knew my anger came from a place of love and relief, but I couldn’t stop myself. She looked like she couldn’t give a fuck that I’d been worried sick about her.

‘All right, calm down,’ said Freya. ‘I’m sorry. I was out and forgot about the time.’

‘But didn’t you see my messages? Missed calls?’

‘My phone was on silent,’ she said.

‘And you never looked at your phone?’

‘No. I didn’t, actually.’

‘You didn’t take photos or Snapchat pictures?’

‘No, because I don’t have any internet while I’m out. Couldn’t get my phone to work earlier.’ Freya scowled at me and then turned to Kian, who had been standing in the doorway. ‘See what I have to put up with?’

‘Freya—’ began Kian.

‘It’s true,’ snapped Freya. ‘Always on my case. Treating me like I’m twelve. God, it’s stifling.’

‘Let’s not have this argument in front of Kian,’ I said, suddenly feeling guilty for my outburst. He’d probably had enough of this sort of stuff at home.

Freya huffed. ‘Dad was right,’ she said.

Instantly, I was on high alert. ‘What do you mean? What did Dad say?’

‘That you’re stressy all the time. I bet if I lived with Dad, he wouldn’t be like this.’

It was a low punch, and I felt every word of it. I saw a moment of regret on Freya’s face, but it was too late; the damage was done, and it hurt. I wanted to cry but blinked away the tears. Freya was just lashing out at the injustice of her home life – and who could blame her? I didn’t want to be the villain, but that was the label she’d clearly applied to me. There was no point arguing; it would only reinforce her accusation. If I did nothing, I was condoning what she’d said. I was in a no-win situation.

I looked from my daughter to Kian, who was painfully uncomfortable at this point. I took a deep breath before speaking. ‘I’m not being stressy, just worried. You’re back now so that’s all good. Where did you go, anyway?’

Freya shrugged. ‘About.’

Never before had I levelled so much self-control. ‘Dingle?’

‘Yeah, the beach. That was all.’

‘I thought you were working for your dad?’ I said to Kian, trying to work out why he was now here when earlier he said he was busy.
